Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure what to expect. That’s why at The Breathing Space Therapy, we offer a free 15-minute initial consultation designed to help you get clarity, feel grounded, and decide whether we are the right fit for your needs.

This short conversation is not a therapy session—it’s an opportunity for connection, understanding, and alignment.

1. What is a 15-Minute Initial Consultation?

A 15-minute consultation is a quick but meaningful introductory call where you and your therapist briefly discuss:

  • The big chapter titles of what’s going on in your life

  • What you’re hoping to receive support with

  • Questions about the therapeutic process

  • How the therapist works and what you can expect in formal sessions

It gives you a sense of comfort and clarity before committing to ongoing therapy.

2. The Agenda We Follow

A. Understanding the “Big Chapter Titles”

Instead of diving deep into your entire history, we focus on the major themes—what I call the “chapter titles” of your life right now.

These may sound like:

  • “I’m feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.”

  • “My relationship is struggling.”

  • “I’m dealing with my child’s behaviour or emotional needs.”

  • “I’m carrying a lot of stress from work or family.”

  • “I’ve been feeling stuck, low, or disconnected.”

This helps us get a clear, high-level picture without pressure to share everything at once.

B. Asking About Your Process

I’ll ask a few supportive questions to understand:

  • How you’ve been coping

  • What feels most urgent

  • What you’re hoping to gain from therapy

  • Whether you’ve tried therapy before

  • What works well for you (and what doesn’t)

This allows me to tailor therapy to your style and needs if we continue working together.

C. Learning About the Therapist and Approach

Clients often want to know:

  • What therapy with me looks like

  • What modalities I use (e.g., somatic work, IFS-informed, EFT, DBT skills)

  • How I structure sessions

  • How we might move through your goals

  • My philosophy around healing, emotional regulation, and empowerment

This part helps you decide whether my style feels safe, approachable, and aligned with what you need.

3. What This Consultation Is Not

The 15-minute call is:

  • Not an intake

  • Not a therapy session

  • Not a clinical assessment

  • Not a space where you need to share every detail of your story

It’s simply a conversation to explore whether you feel comfortable moving forward.

4. Why a 15-Minute Consultation Helps

Reduces Anxiety About the Unknown

A brief conversation lets you experience the tone, pacing, and energy of the therapist.

Supports Emotional Safety

You can ask questions without committing financially or emotionally.

Ensures a Good Client-Therapist Fit

Research clearly shows that the therapeutic relationship is one of the strongest predictors of progress.
A quick consult helps us see if that relationship feels right for you.

Clarifies Next Steps

If it feels like a good match, we’ll move into booking a full intake session.

5. How to Know if You’re Ready for Therapy After the Consultation

You will likely feel:

  • A sense of relief

  • A clearer understanding of the process

  • A feeling that “this person gets me”

  • Or a sense that you still need to explore other fit options—both are okay

Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision, and this short call helps you make that choice intentionally.

6. Ready to Begin Your Journey?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, stuck, or disconnected, a 15-minute conversation can be the first gentle step toward clarity and support
